About this listen

Tim McInnerny stars as Allan Quatermaine in this dramatic full-cast BBC Radio 4 adaptation of H Rider Haggard's classic Victorian novel.

A chance meeting with Sir Henry Curtis and his friend John Good leads professional game hunter Allan Quatermaine on a dangerous expedition to the uncharted, hostile heart of Africa. Curtis's brother disappeared while searching for the legendary diamond mine of King Solomon, and he needs Quatermaine's expertise to re-trace his brother's journey. Quatermaine agrees to Curtis's generous terms, on the condition that the money is paid to his son if he does not survive.

Joined by the imposing, mysterious Zulu Umbopa, the trio set off into the unknown. As they journey from the barren desert to the precipitous mountains, they discover clues from a past adventurer, now dead - and come close to death themselves.

They encounter fierce Kukuana warriors, the beautiful Foulata, the blood-thirsty King Twala and his ancient, evil witch-finder Gagool – but will they find the mine and the treasure that is rumoured to lie within it? And if they do, will they make it out alive?

This vivid dramatisation of Haggard's popular adventure story is a combination of thrilling treasure hunt, suspenseful mystery and gripping psychological drama.

Among the cast are Sope Dirisu and Adjoa Andoh.

Great adventure story

I enjoyed the journey through deepest Africa with Alain Quartermain. Short story full of character and adventure. Readers were good and background music, sounds and dramatisation bought the story to life.

A Ripping Yarn

At just under 2 hours long you may feel you don’t get much for your money but this is an engaging and well made dramatisation of this classic Rider-Haggard adventure story which is worth every penny. In the best tradition of all ripping yarns, it delivers up a hazardous journey into the unknown in the search of a lost brother & the legendary diamond mines of King Solomon with the discovery of a lost world to boot. On a tick list of things we have come to expect from an epic tale of derring-do, this one delivers on all of them with style. A lot is crammed into 2 hours of storytelling but it is done so without losing sight of the distinct characters which develop nicely as the story progresses. Congratulations to the cast for bringing this epic to life & to the BBC for creating an excellent audio drama. I’m now on the look out for my next one.

MY FAVOURITE STORY OF ALL TIME

I absolutely love King Solomons Mines. From the first time I read it many years ago, I have lost count just how many times I've read it since! When I seen this audiobook I snatched it up right away - and was NOT disappointed! This well crafted dramatisation does the book justice and them some - the amazing performances keep you hooked from start to finish, and during my long business trips I've found myself listening to the whole thing then go back to the beginning and listen all over again! I have one request to the talented people who made this - please PLEASE do a dramatisation of 'Allan Quatermain' - the sequel to KSM. The sequel is just as good as the first, and casting the same people into that would be absolutely amazing!! I'd be the first to buy it rest assured!! Great work thanks for making this!

Good escapist fun

This is good escapist fun for just under 2 hours
The cast are pretty good and there are some chuckles along the way to be had
I knew that rider haggard had had a pretty colourful life and this drama captures that fun and
Adventure to a tee
Lets face it we need a bit of escapism with covid 19 in our faces each day
And this delivers on that
I listened to it 3 times in the end over a month or so and it’s is well worth giving a go

A fantastic story

Tim McInnerny (Lord Percy + Captain Darling from Blackadder series) plays intrepid explorer Allan Quatermain.

All three of the classic novels dramatised by the BBC, and added to Audible this month, have been excellent and are highly recommended.

The other two are:

War of the Worlds, H G Wells
Journey to the centre of the Earth, Jules Verne

Utterly Brilliant!

Now I see why this is a classic. What an adventure!
The production is top class from the acting to the music and sound effects, it really puts you right into the heart of each scene and loved e wry moment of it.

It took very little time at all to get into the story which held my attention throughout.

It's quite short too so an easy buy that you can listen to on a long journey.

I highly recommend!
