About this listen
The half-orc girl, Mikaia Goretusk, has been torn from her home. Her world. Her family. Her only allies are the holy knight, Arthur Shield, once sworn to kill everyone she has ever cared for, and the witch, Hazel Midd. Arthur struggles with the guilt of being unable to save his god. Hazel seeks desperately for something taken from her. They distrust each other, but both are compelled to protect the young girl.
To return her home, they must battle angry mobs, hags, and dark wizards. They will seek the aid of the Knights of Saban. The very god that ordered the extermination of her family. But Saban is dead, and not all is as it should be in his temple. The knights have enlisted the use of dark magics to rekindle the fear that was once theirs by right.
Mikaia’s road home will be a long one. Will her first step in that journey be the last?

Fresh modern fantasy
Whilst this is technically a sequel to Jack Bloodfist: Fixer there is no need to have read that before starting this. This book is set in a more tradition fantasy setting (orcs, magic, paladins, etc) and has a few characters from the original where Jack Bloodfist: Fixer was a urban fantasy.
This book following the perspective for three main character flicking between them as the story needs. The first MC is Mikaia Goretusk who is a 6 year old Half Orc. Her naivety makes her for a very lovely little girl. She is protected by Arther Shield who was a Paladin for the dead God Saban. His view of the world has changed after his God died and his beliefs have to be questioned, who is friend or foe. These two encounter Hazel who is young witch on their journey. She is very reluctant to trust the former Paladin but their paths align so she decides to tag along.
The narrator does a great job with the voices and allows for the story to flow and not being confusing with the change of perspectives.
I loved this books as it felt very fresh and is compelling with flawed characters which are very relatable and hints of a bigger intriguing world.
James Jakins is very upcoming author being a SPFBO finalist in 2017 with Jack Bloodfist: Fixer. This fantasy book has a very modern feeling and I will be keeping an eye out for future books of his and looking at his previous ones.
