Det er hård kost, Hazel fortæller tingene lige ud ad landevejen. Soldaternes sprog er sjofelt og saftigt. Deres oplevelser på bordeller, orgier i udskejelser. Deres kampe med russerne bestialske myrderier. Sådan er krig. Sven Hazel ved det. Han har prøvet det. Han bruger korte knappe sætninger, maner det en forrykte billede frem for læserne efter det andet, så vi mærker lusene krybe på os, kulden bide og angsten for døden stikke som syle. Det er spændende læsning.
