1943. Deux ans après Pearl Harbor, le " Grand Japon " est aux abois. Mais les Alliés entament une vaste contre offensive qui s’achèvera par l’horreur nucléaire d’Hiroshima et de Nagasaki, puis l’humiliante capitulation.

Dans ce second volet de La Guerre du Pacifique, Nicolas Bernard retrace la course folle d’un empire vers sa chute. En ressort également la dimension herculéenne de la reconquête alliée, combinaison d’odyssées militaires à travers l’immensité de l’Asie et sur le plus grand océan du monde, non sans rivalités diplomatiques et coloniales. Le tableau devient complet lorsqu’il inclut la Chine – théâtre méconnu, territoire dévasté, peuple martyrisé –, et aussi les plaies mémorielles laissées par le conflit, qui tourmentent encore les anciens belligérants eux-mêmes.
