Summary

A different side of Dumas

Initially I was losing interest in what I assumed was going to be a more amateur version of Dumas’s later page-turning pot boilers, but this novel is in a different vein. In the end Dumas does a good job of making a moral point that was clearly very radical for his time. What a damning illustration of the absurdly different standards applied to men and women. Marguerite is a much more audacious character to argue for than Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

This is a more audacious take on the Tess of the d’Urberville’s moral
