About this listen

BBC Audio presents Lady Susan, Jane Austen's early novel not published until after her death. Widowed Lady Susan is an outrageous flirt and a dreadful mother, constantly controlling and embarrassing the people around her.

When Lady Susan remarries, she attempts to push her daughter into a bleak marriage with a man she despises. Deceit slowly spreads through a series of letters exchanged between Lady Susan, her daughter, friends, family and arch enemies. Will the truth be unravelled in time?

Starring Imelda Staunton, Alicia Johnson and Maggie Steed.

Too many superfluous non-Austen additions spoiled my enjoyment of performances by excellent cast. Better than free Plus American version, however, which was ponderous and lacking in sparkle. I was so sure R4 version would be ideal, and am disappointed it didn't quite meet my expectations.

Enjoyable performances, disappointing adaptation

Jane Austen Not!! I want to get this out of my library as fast as possible! This ploy of pretending to be Jane Austen or “co-written” or similar to, is such an insult to any reader who is really familiar with the author, Wilbur Smith with Blah Blah ( exactly!! Who?…!!!) is another!

Absolutely dire
