Summary
Questo romanzo scritto nel 1917, narra della crisi spirituale di un vescovo anglicano, proprio durante la guerra, in cui visioni soprannaturali, indotte casualmente da una droga somministratagli inconsapevolmente, lo portano a superare i particolarismi delle varie confessioni per arrivare ad una fede più pura.
"È più facile che un vescovo smetta di credere in Dio che smetta di credere alla Chiesa", dice l'autore. Ma il protagonista di questo libro sembra proprio l'eccezione a questa convinzione, perché ricomincia a credere in Dio, abbandonando la Chiesa e rinunciando a tutte le comodità e sicurezze che questa gli offre. Lo stesso Wells sperimentò una conversione religiosa in questo periodo di guerra, pertanto il libro ha accenti appassionati e vissuti.
