Summary

John Griffin and Michael South - agents in the renegade counterterrorism agency Last Line, and closer than brothers. It's a fast-lane life of danger and excitement. John loves every minute of it, but he's facing one big problem now: his feelings for Mike have flared up from friendship into a passion he can no longer hide. And Mike, although the bravest and best of partners, doesn't feel the same.

Their one sexual encounter leaves them baffled and alienated from one another. Mike is a haunted man, shaken by flashbacks to his past life as an MI5 agent and a mission in Russia that went terribly wrong. He's been left with a need for violence between the sheets, and John isn't prepared to hurt him.

Not everyone has Mike's best interests at heart. Their ruthless boss hires a ghost from Mike's past to help track down a Russian war criminal who's planted a nuclear device in the heart of London. Anzhel Mattvei knows all of Mike's dark secrets, and soon regains his former sexual thralldom over him, leaving Mike locked in battle for his will and his soul. Anzhel has turned Mike into a human detonation device. Only John's love can pull him back from the brink - and save millions of lives in the fallout zone.

Well…

The narrator gave me a 100%, congratulations, it was amazing! The story though… I think it could be better

Couldn’t stop listening

It was a surprise to hear explicit male sex scenes in the book at first , but it added to this adventure story. And developed the relationship between John and Michael. I loved the characters and the story is well written and has a few twists and turns.

one of the best

Anyone who is uncomfortable with torture, rape or unclear consent should steer clear.
Performance was amazing the narrator really brought life into the characters. I really loved the book but the end part was horrible. It was out of place, the jump from over all dark theme to rolling in the grass and playing happy home felt somehow glued over.

💥Tight, Taut, Torturous Thriller

It is incidental the protagonists are M/M because front and centre is the plot and worldbuilding. Please pay attention to the opening chapter that sets up everything because Ms. Fox expects you to remember. Bless her! The prose may be beautiful but oh boy, the torture, mind programming, bondage and visceral brutality? Twists and turns ramped up my anxiety and stress as I helplessly listened going ohmygodohmygodohmygod! Then moments of affection, tenderness, sensuality and John’s pivotal role in saving Michael soothed! The subtle paranormal element was skimmed over but slotted in nicely. Last Line is grim but get ready to have your mind engaged by masterful storytelling and hold out for the happy ending!

🎧 Mr. Thorpe’s performance here was riveting! I love narrators following the author’s directions so that when a character gasps or snorts, you hear it. That commitment would be worth all the stars for David Thorpe but his performance here is all around outstanding. The scenes of torture are harrowing; the scenes of paranormal are strange; and the scenes of connection are joyful because DT’s vocal acting perfectly conveys e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. 🎭 Michael runs the gauntlet of emotion - abject terror, pain, anguish, laughter, relief, tenderness, arousal – and Mr. Thorpe captures each one in character. The accents are fun, my favourite being Anzhel’s Russian because it was delivered in an ☺️ outrageously charming baritone!

listen to in a day

not only did it have a great story line to it, and get me listening to book 2 in the series as soon as book one finished ( which I listen to in a day while I worked).

but the narrator is one of the best I've listened to, to date! he is excellent at individual accents and can switch between the characters so fluidly that is almost like having a narrator and cast. certainly going to be hunting out other books he's the narrator of. 👍👍👍

Interesting plot… Amazing narration!

Honestly, I normally go for the soppy romance stories but took a chance on this book as it was included with audible. Honestly, the story was interesting and drew me in from the 1st chapter! David Thorpe does an amazing job of narration. Can’t recommend this audiobook enough!

Disturbing but in a strangely good way

Harper Fox is shaping up to be one of my favourite writers so far. But this book in particular I have a love hate relationship with. I felt... really uncomfortable in some scenes and it was emotionally draining but I could not stop and leave it there. i needed to know what happens next. This book definitely needs trigger warnings but with those in place its amazing!!! I love the build up and the resolution. A few things I would have liked differently : Michael forgiving Angel is the one thing I cannot abide by... after everything I do not think its fair or right or even in character. And I feel it would feel more of a thriller if we didnt know from chapter one what was really happening to Michael. If we left it a mystery it would have been so much better. But overall a fantastic experience and the narrator is Gold!
