Summary

From the author of The Campaign and No Rules of Engagement...

Pamela Wright will never forgive her sister for dying in the Afghanistan war or the army for Laura's death or anyone else for making it okay for Laura to go halfway around the world to fight for reasons Pam has never fathomed. Numb with grief, she buries her sister but not her rage. Among the mourners is Trish Tomlinson, who loved Laura long ago and has found the news of Laura's death sharply painful. She remembers Pam as an unwelcome third wheel but now finds comfort in the company of the young medical resident and in the details of Laura's journal that Pam shares.

Brought together by grief, something more grows. Guilt and anger cloud their feelings and jeopardize any chance at a future. How can love blossom in the shadow of death?

A book full of tears and understanding

The narrator is brilliant, the story gripping and grabs the reader by the guts about 20 times more than any book should have the ability to and the characters are relatable, likable and interesting enough to propel the narrative forward so that the book may admonish it's thematic message to the audience.

Found it an easy read.

Was not a bad read ,found the story line believable enough. Why are all our characters professional people? just asking.

AN EMOTIONAL JOURNEY

This storyline is an emotional journey in dealing with loss of love, family and friends. The loss of that person just being, and the loss of what was. Finding the strength to go on and make new beginnings and to live and love anew. A touching beautiful romance rises from the ashes. The narration was exceptional quality, a great listen.🎶

Left me feeling melancholy!

I have enjoyed Tracey Richardson’s books and this was no different however because of the theme it left me feeling melancholy even up to and including the epilogue for the lost life of Laura. Felt like I went on the journey with them so must have been a good book but felt drained and thoughtful after.

A wonderful story, so timely again in August 2021

This wonderful, emotionally charged book is a tribute to courage and sacrifice wherever they are found. It is beautifully written with an inspired, meaningful plot and characters that illustrate an insightful understanding of the human psyche by the author, Tracey Richardson. Indeed the book feels so real that it could be autobiographical and it is skilfully narrated by Maxine Mitchell, who conveys the emotion of the story beautifully.

Although fundamentally a story about finding love, this is no lightweight romance but deals thoughtfully with difficult themes. The personal sadness, about loss, at the core of the novel would have been sweetned by the positive ending when the book was written. Sadly though, in August 2021, when I listened to this audiobook the story has been overtaken by the heartbreaking events in Afghanistan as the dreaded Taliban take back control of the country.

It is now impossible not to listen without a deep sadness for every allied veteran who has fought the Taliban, or in the war against terror, and though the price of their sacrifice lmore bearable because of improvements to the lives of ordinary Afghani people, especially women, girls and those from minority groups. That these veterans now feel a terrible betrayal that their own, their comrades and their families sacrifices have been for nothing and the people they thought they were helping are being abandoned to fear and suffering due to political expediency, throws a pall of heartbreak over this tale that the author could never have foreseen.

Do not be put off by the serious nature of this book. It is a very worthwhile listen that raises important but difficult issues. Not least among these are love not hate, that we can all be courageous and that we must not forget the veterans who are asked to fight on our behalf. This is a book that I will never forget.

I very much hope that Audible will produce more audobooks written by Tracey Richardson and narrated by Maxine Mitchell.
