La période qu'il couvre est plus restreinte que celle du 1er livre des Maccabées : il s'ouvre sur les derniers jours de Séleucos IV et se conclut sur la défaite quinze ans plus tard du général Nicanor par Judas Maccabée, héros de l'ouvrage.
Les Maccabées, Macabées ou Macchabées sont une famille juive qui mena la résistance contre la politique d'hellénisation pratiquée par les Séleucides au IIe siècle av. J.-C. Ils fondèrent la dynastie des Hasmonéens.
