Arthur Rimbaud a écrit Le Bateau ivre en 1871 à l'âge de 16 ans. Le poème raconte la dérive d'un bateau sans maître chahuté par les flots. Le navire est en fait le reflet des tourments de l'âme du poète. On peut y déceler de nombreuses références à Charles Baudelaire, Jules Verne, Edgar Allan Poe, Leconte de Lisle, Théophile Gautier.

Le poème est considéré par beaucoup de poètes surréalistes du vingtième siècle comme l'un des plus beaux poèmes de la langue française.
