Summary
An orphan girl gets help from a goose. A poor family receives a magical gift. A boy is stranded alone on a ship in a storm. And two magicians perform a deadly trick.
Folk tales are immensely popular in China. Passed down orally over the centuries from grandparents and parents to children, they serve as an unwritten handbook for living in society. Within every Chinese folk tale is an underlying moral message derived from one of the three major schools of spiritual thought–Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism.
Of the thousands of Chinese folk tales, we’ve selected four for your enjoyment in this audiobook. The four that we’ve retold here all have interesting plot lines, and they all deal with relatively simple subject matter that can be told using a limited vocabulary. All four of these tales are based on stories told by Norman Hinsdale Pitman in A Chinese Wonder Book, originally published in 1918. We have retold all four stories to use only 540 different Chinese words, most of which are in the standard 1200-word HSK4 vocabulary. This audiobook contains the stories told in "slow Chinese" by a native Chinese. The pinyin and English versions of the stories from the original paperback are not included in this audiobook.
These stories are written by the best-selling writing team of Jeff Pepper and Xiao Hui Wang, authors of the Journey to the West series of graded readers, translations of Chinese classics including the Dao De Jing, the Art of War, and the San Zi Jing, and lots of other great books.
