About this listen

Milano (P)2017 Emons Italia S.r.l.

A work of probing life-and-death questions

A departure from Simenon's usual reportage style I very much enjoyed. A haunting tale of obsession and murder, a middle-age crisis: "How did I end up here?" to the point where the worry becomes so persistent that he commits a crime to assert his free will. Simenon is a master of making his madmen eerily relatable, at least for a good chunk of the story, till he pulls the switch and you realise they were totally psycho the whole time and you're left questioning your own silly dark-hearted self.
