Excellent story

This book starts with details of an explosion which killed a man and then goes back and draws you into the story which led to that event. It’s a captivating story by Paul Auster and also is read so well by Peter Ganim.

Stilted dialogue

The narrator is good. The story is implausible but quite interesting. The characters are beyond eccentric or odd and not much like actual human beings. They talk in incredibly stilted ways like characters from an Arthur Miller play. I suspect that Paul Auster wishes he had written Death of a Salesman and this is his version. I have thoroughly enjoyed others of his novels such as Mr Vertigo, but this one was a struggle to complete. If you feel at home with people who are utterly self absorbed and like to talk about it at length then Leviathan is for you.
