About this listen
Growing up poor but proud on the Dorset coast, Mary follows after her father, hunting for fossils of ancient creatures. Ignoring other's taunts, Mary faces danger to bring back valuable treasures to help feed her family. But tragedy and despair are never far away. Mary must depend upon her unique courage and knowledge to fulfil her dream of becoming a scientist, in a time when girls have no opportunities for such ambitions. What will happen when she makes her greatest discovery of all?

The title of this book is not very enticing to a middle aged woman like myself as it would seem to be aimed at a young adult audience. However, I’m sure all ages would enjoy this book. The first couple of chapters as with a lot of books is quite slow but by the time I reached the end I was most definitely cherishing every last word hoping it would continue.
For anyone even slightly interested in history, fossils, geology, female figures, social differences it is a must listen/read. It is sad, frustrating, motivating and heart warming. I was especially pleased to see the authors notes at the end providing detail of what was based on fact and where fiction was added to an amazing story which is based on a truly remarkable woman.
Great read and great woman
