About this listen

Cameroonian author Hemley Boum brings us "Little Pa", a potent story of a boy who grows into a man battling with identity.

Zacharias is his maternal grandfather’s namesake, though he has never met said grandfather or any other extended family members. He represses questions he has as a way of trying to protect himself and his mother, Dorothée, who is prone to bouts of depression. But he cannot ignore his reality forever and in adolescence, Zacharias begins to commit small acts of rebellion leading to a final act that goes horribly wrong and leads him to exile and a new life where he promises himself never to look back.

Translated from French by one of Africa’s new leading voices in writing and translation, Edwige-Renée Dro.

About the Creator - Hemley Boum

About the Creator

Hemley Boum: A novelist, poet, and essayist, Hemley was born in Cameroon where she studied anthropology before taking up the study of international trade in Lille, leaving Douala’s tropical rains for cold northern France. After a first position in Paris, she returned to Cameroon as key account manager of the Cameroonian subsidiary of a French firm. Exploring her own country, the discovery of the agri-food, cotton and forestry industries greatly enriched her vision of Cameroonian society and the international exploitation of local resources. She went on to live in several African countries before settling in Paris and finding the form of writing that suited her. In her novels, Hemley Boum crystalizes urbanity, tradition and history, captured in the daily life of close relationships, giving a thought-provoking insider’s view of an Africa far from clichés.

Beautiful story and writing

Beautiful writing, gentle pace that hides and/ or protect the main character from painful experiences lingering throughout . . .
A writer who should be so celebrated, more please.
