Background to Lord John's story.
I have been reading the Outlander series in chronological order and this book falls between Voyager and Drums of Autumn. JAMMF is still on his mind

Development of the character Lord John Grey
Waiting for the next book in the Outlander series to be published, so meanwhile exploring the Lord John Grey novellas. Great writing by Diana, as always; full of intrigue and description. Narration was OK.
I'll be downloading the next in the LJG series!

Not bad
Not as good as Outlander main books but if like me you need a taste to keep you hanging in there while you wait for book 9 of the main series to be released, it will do. Narration could be better with a little more acting like they achieve in the main books but you do get used to it.

Delicious
My favourite Outlander character, Lord John is propelled into solving a mystery after spying something nasty in the communal chamber pot corner in the Beefsteak Club. Gabaldon at her best, drawing us into the sights, sounds and smells of whore houses, molly walks and on a clipper bound for 'Inja'. Lord John gives us a glimpse via flashbacks into his first shocking introduction to war at Culloden and of course hankers after Jamie Fraser. It was nice to get an idea of Benedicta who relives a part of her young life while handling a well worn copy of Fanny Hill! Watch out for the details of a bizarre and shocking way designed to burn out the syphalis. Shame Hal doesn't feature in this one but a great story well narrated.

Spoilt by the Narrator
It’s very hard to get past the poor narration. Why not find an English narrator to read an English character? The accents of the other characters are even worse and ruined it for me. I would have expected better from a Diana Gabaldon story!

As an English person certain errors really grate. plait pronounced plate, instead of platt. arrgh

Narrator a bit of a let down compared to usual
Narration by Jeff Woodman is somewhat disappointing after the high standard I had got used to on the main series narrated by Davina Porter.
Specifically while he can read beautifully in an posh english accent, he simply cannot do any regional accents at all. In the book - there are Scottish, Irish, Cockney charactars which after Davina's excellent rendition I was expecting to be done in appropriate accents - not so! - I think the Scottish sounds vaguely Irish, but anything working class, northern or even cornish - just sounds odd. I really do think someone should have given him the feedback on this before these were published.

Another excellent book & narration
I love the Outlander series and have now been listening to the Lord John series as well which are also excellent. I love to hear the history and back story of the other characters in main Outlander books. I love Jamie and Claire but Lord John is fast becoming a favourite as well.
