Summary

Kiram Kir-Zaki may be considered a mechanist prodigy among his own people, but when he becomes the first Haldiim ever admitted to the prestigious Sagrada Academy, he is thrown into a world where power, superstition and swordplay outweigh even the most scholarly of achievements.

But when the intimidation from his Cadeleonian classmates turns bloody, Kiram unexpectedly finds himself befriended by Javier Tornesal, the leader of a group of cardsharps, duelists and lotharios who call themselves Hellions.

However Javier is a dangerous friend to have. Wielder of the White Hell and sole heir of a dukedom, he is surrounded by rumors of forbidden seductions, murder and damnation. His enemies are many and any one of his secrets could not only end his life but Kiram's as well.

Contains mature themes.

Interesting start

Really enjoyable well written story with likeable characters. Was dubious about the narrator to start but turned out good.

Loved it

When the narrator first started I was really put of but after the first few minutes I really likes his voice for the characters. I wish I'd waited for book two to come out before listening though because this ends on a cliffhanger

Great LGBT fantasy

World-building, romance, fighting, magical and plenty of drama. Main characters really like each other and try to treat each other like well, however homophobia, religion and racism cause tensions.

The narration is a bit hit and miss, however doesn’t get in the way of enjoying the story. The narrator has a great voice however sometimes he does emphasise words oddly in a sentence, as though he is having to record on first reading or something. Not a major issue from my point of view.

A True Gem Of LGBT Fantasy

Brilliant and heartfelt storytelling. Extremely well-balanced story with multidimensional, fun characters. Lovingly and skillfully crafted world that is introduced to the reader so naturally and seamlessly.

It's definitely a favorite for me, and solid all-rounder, except for one thing: the narration. I really think a better narrator could have been chosen. Sadly, the narration hindered the story instead of elevating it. I just did not want to reflect my dislike for the narration in the overall rating of the book, since I love it much.

too long.

rather tortuous and that includes the somewhat over-precise narration. Also some of the main concepts were not clearly outlined e.g what is the white hell?

Warm escapism

I really enjoyed this book. Great world-building, exciting plot, and likable characters. The narrator's performance brought an additional sense of warmth to the story and made the characters' come across as more likable.

disappointed

I had high hopes for this book and the world building was cool but the story slowly miandered and all arcs were unresolved at the "end" also they was a lot of mysogeny and homophobia. Maybe adressed in the next book but not sure I care enough to find out

Great world building

I don’t think this narrator works for me, I found him...odd...to listen to, like he stressed the wrong words and such.
I am in love with the world building here, wouldn’t want to live there, but I found it intriguing, however, I hated the two main characters.
I would recommend getting the ebook, and I definitely recommend the book, no matter my feelings towards the two boys.
