About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author of Chasing the Scream, a radically new way of thinking about depression and anxiety.

What really causes depression and anxiety - and how can we really solve them? Award-winning journalist Johann Hari suffered from depression since he was a child and started taking antidepressants when he was a teenager. He was told that his problems were caused by a chemical imbalance in his brain. As an adult, trained in the social sciences, he began to investigate whether this was true - and he learned that almost everything we have been told about depression and anxiety is wrong.

Across the world, Hari found social scientists who were uncovering evidence that depression and anxiety are not caused by a chemical imbalance in our brains. In fact, they are largely caused by key problems with the way we live today. Hari's journey took him from a mind-blowing series of experiments in Baltimore, to an Amish community in Indiana, to an uprising in Berlin.

Once he had uncovered nine real causes of depression and anxiety, they led him to scientists who are discovering seven very different solutions - ones that work. It is an epic journey that will change how we think about one of the biggest crises in our culture today.

Well worth a read / listen if you suffer from or have suffered with anxiety and or depression. At some points I felt somewhat despondent because my parameters to change are narrow but I'm glad I perservered. This book gives you hope, a new perspective and something to work with. Fantastic work.

I had heard snippets of this eveidance in the past from other sources, but johann lays it all out, sandwiched between delightful human stories. Tho I consider myself well at the moment I am terrified of suffering depression again and I did find listening to the book unbalanced my mood, due to challenging my thinking, several days. but I'm glad I listen 2 the end. This book has helped me shift my priorities and see more clearly how 2 stay well.

The title might sound over dramatic but, truly, this is how I feel about this book.
The research that has gone into defining some basic principles for the causes of (and help to recover from) depression and anxiety is truly astonishing, as is the theory as to why it is not more widely considered. The potential truths considered in this amazing book cannot begin to compete with the billion dollar industry in chemical ‘cures’ for a so-called ‘chemical’ problem.
I’ve suffered with depression for many years, always being told it’s a problem with my brain. I’ve relied on chemical anti- depressants for more years than I care to remember, feeling better for a little while until the efficacy reduces and a new drug is prescribed, leading to some chronic withdrawal symptoms and more serious illness than the depression. This book has given me real cause to hope for a break from all that and try to work on the real cure - reconnection.
I loved Johann’s delivery narrating his own text and I literally could not stop listening until the last word. Thank you - I really do believe it has helped to change my life.

Everyone needs to read this book, finally an answer to the failed ideas of the purely physical (biological) model of depression in our culture.

This book is life changing and I have read many. This book should be introduced to teenagers and professionals. I am recommending it to everyone. Not once have I felt so excited about a book. Incredible work and love the way it was written and the way author was asking questions and debating it with himself, that’s exactly the questions I was asking. Amazing
