Shortlisted, Comedy Women in Print Prize
Yasmin Ghorami has a lot to be grateful for: a loving family, a fledgling career in medicine and a charming, handsome fiancé, fellow doctor Joe Sangster. But now the moment she has been dreading has arrived: it is time for her family to meet Joe's firebrand feminist mother.
As the two families are drawn closer together, long-held secrets, lies and betrayals unravel on both sides—and Yasmin is forced to ask herself what she really wants in a relationship and what a 'love marriage' actually means ...
Critic reviews
"Bold, compassionate, big-hearted, pitch-perfectly written, and utterly unputdownable." (Neel Mukherjee, Booker Prize-shortlisted author of The Lives of Others)
"I absolutely loved it. Exquisitely written with big heartedness, intelligence and passion." (Ruth Jones, author of Never Greener)

Favourite book of 2023
Beautifully written.
Sensitive. A human story, a slice of life. Look forward to more novels written by this author.

INTELLIGENT UNEXPECTED BRILLIANT
An engaging descent into the psychosocial labyrinth in which culture, career, background and identity manage to entangle us. It’s multilayered nature surprises, stretches and disturbs. Ayesha Dharker’s narration is outstanding. Sensitive, beautiful, impassioned and expressive of the unfolding drama. It stopped being a narration and became a dramatisation. An excellent book.

Brillant
This book was recommended by my cousin , She mostly has a good taste soI i was not dissapoited, it’s a story about relationship, and its struggles from daily life made just a bit different by the family of the main character, but the-story unfolds steadily but never boring , and very well narrated

An intriguing story
To understand everything you need to listen to everything. At times I thought why am I needing to hear all of this but towards the end you realise how richly layered this story telling is and that only by hearing it all do you truly appreciate the end.

not my favourite of her works but very enjoyable
my favourite Monica Ali book is In the Kitchen but this may come a close second. I would give it five stars though I felt it lost its way a little in the middle but I did enjoy how Ali brought it all together at the end and finally after her getting on my nerves for some time I finally warmed to Jasmine who constantly whined about her brother needing to grow up when she was in fact the one who needed to do all the growing. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who is a fan of the genre.

Brilliant
This is not for someone looking for a thriller- it is a sensitive journey through the life of a family. Lots of surprises and thrilling moments. I just loved it and learnt so much through the lives of the characters.
