About this listen
Lovers' Vows by Elizabeth Inchbald. Presented by The Online Stage.
Lovers' Vows is Elizabeth Inchbald's controversial adaptation of the German play Das Kind der Liebe (The Love Child) by August von Kotzebue. Though it met with great success both on stage and in print, some were concerned discussion of premarital sex and the leveling of social rank. Essential listening for readers of Mansfield Park
There are probably many other reasons to listen, but I came here as I wished to know more about the play which features so prominently in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. I urge any readers of that book to spend a little time on this interesting work. Edmund's reasons for not wanting it performed at Mansfield Park begin to seem slightly less disinterested than at first sight.
