About this listen

ALAN RICKMAN was one of the world-class actors of his generation, as well as a tireless political activist, an avid traveller and a devoted confidant and friend. Through his never-before-seen diaries – a twenty-five-year passion project – Rickman invites readers backstage and into his life.

A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard’s villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today. But Rickman’s artistry wasn’t confined to just his performances. Rickman’s writing details the extraordinary and the ordinary in a way that is anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid. He takes us behind the scenes on films and plays ranging from Sense & Sensibility, the Harry Potter series, Private Lives, My Name is Rachel Corrie and many more.

The diaries run from 1993 to his death in 2016 and offer insight into both a public and private life. Here is Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveller, the fan, the director, the enthusiast: in short, the real Alan Rickman. Here is a life fully lived, all detailed in intimate and characteristically plain-spoken prose. Reading the diaries is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend.

Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman’s early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began.

A review in a national newspaper said it was a missery journal , it is Not , it is very funny

Loved it

Despite it being what it says, a bunch of diary entries, I loved this. The entries themselves were individually pedestrian but the narration gave the effect of AR musing aloud

Unexpectedly good

It is a reading of diary entries. The first lot are brief and uninteresting but as it goes on he 'talks' to his diary more so it gets better.

Bless Alan, I loved him as an actor, orator and philospher but this got a little tedious…. Better as the book with his superbly drawn pictures. Buy the book instead :)

A bit dreary

I love Rickman’s work but this is read by a person who mispronounces so many words, and whose tone does not capture Rickman’s brilliance at all. Content- wise, there are so many names dropped that it will only appeal to those who recognise the characters. There are many mentions of shared meals but limited insight into characters (apart from those deemed by Alan to be open, kind and funny). I would have liked to understand more about his non- theatrical life and marriage.

Dreadful narration spoils this

I love Alan Rickman but the guy reading the diaries was enough to put one off entirely. If Rickman had been one iota as poncey, hammy & self indulgent sounding as this guy then he’d have been expelled from acting in the 1960’s & been seen no more. I resent my wasted credit

Dear heaven - the narrator is awful

Content was interesting to see the man behind the screen, camera and stage curtain. He clear love for his wife, family and friends are expressed.

To to it was let down by the narrator as he failed to bring the full feeling of the words to me. But this is only my view. Listen for yourselves as the content is very much worth it.

Interesting life and a view inside the mind.

I first saw Alan Rickman in the television adaptation of Barchester Towers. His diaries support the belief I had that he was an extremely talented man. No lovey but a man who took his craft seriously and supported his fellow players. His humanity and fallibility is there in quantity. So enjoyable listening to the varied and well travelled life he led. The narration is excellent. Well recommended. I do miss that beautiful speaking voice but he was so muchmore than that.

Utterly fascinating

These diary entries are short and factual yet still present a picture of the life of Alan Rickman.

A fascinating account

The book and the man are great but the audio rendition is let down by inappropriate sentences intonation which lends continuous sarcasm to statements which are a pensative reflection and not necessarily sarcastic. it makes the man sound very caustic which according to the actual text he was not.

This was otherwise a good read

Great thinking man and artist
