About this listen
Callum Hunt's summer break isn't like other kids'. His closest companion is a Chaos-ridden wolf, Havoc. His father suspects him of being secretly evil. And, of course, most kids aren't heading back to school in the magical world of the Magisterium....
It's not easy for Call...and it gets even harder after he checks out his basement and discovers that his dad might be trying to destroy both him and Havoc.
Call escapes to the Magisterium, but things only intensify there. The Alkahest - a copper gauntlet capable of separating certain magicians from their magic - has been stolen. And in their search to discover the culprit, Call and his friends awaken the attention of some very dangerous foes - and get closer to an even more dangerous truth.
As the mysteries of the Magisterium deepen and widen, best-selling authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare take listeners on an extraordinary journey through one boy's conflict - and a whole world's fate.

Excellent Authors fun story, however...
I love these authors I think they are so creative. The story is fun and I think it is for a wide range of ages. Callum is 13 and a unique character and we feel we know his teenage angst. The characters are lively and plenty of sarcasm and darkness that is the standard for most teens. So well written with developed characters that make you laugh and sympathise with. You really can't put this book down.
However, the narration is clumsy and takes away from the written rhythm of the dialogue. Paul Boehmer or the editing of this story makes me cringe, only the story itself keeps me going. There are these long pauses in the sentence structure that sound like a full stop and so it feels clumsy, and jerky, with a change in tone or edited with a long pause while he reads. For example; Callum pulls his. shirt up over his head. or Callum runs as fast as his leg would carry him but his. foot hits. a rock and he stumbles. Even the lilt in his voice puts the sentence at an end - it's not like a breath pause its a full break in the sentences. A bit like he's lost his place and needs to find it again. I really want to do the whole series but am apprehensive about how patient I can be with his narration. I may have to resort to the written word.
