Summary
Sometimes Marisa gets the fanciful notion that Kate has visited the house before. She makes herself at home without any self-consciousness. She puts her toothbrush right there in the master bathroom, on the shelf next to theirs.
In Jake, Marisa has found everything she’s ever wanted. Then their new lodger, Kate, arrives.
Something about Kate isn’t right. Is it the way she looks at Marisa’s boyfriend? Sits too close on the sofa? Constantly asks about the baby they are trying for? Or is it all just in Marisa’s head?
After all, that’s what her Jake keeps telling her, and she trusts him - doesn’t she?
But Marisa knows something is wrong. That the woman sleeping in their house will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
Marisa just doesn’t know why.
How far will she go to find the answer - and how much is she willing to lose?
Critic reviews
"A dark, sleek, ever-tightening spiral.... Completely, terrifyingly brilliant." (Marian Keyes, author of Grown Ups)
"Elizabeth Day has written that rare book I always go hunting for, something that will keep me breathless with suspense but also buoyant with good energy. It is both sinister and comforting, outrageous but grounded, with a head-spinning plot twist...Magpie is a book that needed to exist in the world. It is the book that was missing." (Lisa Taddeo, author of Three Women and Animal)
"The most mind-blowing book of the year." (Joanna Cannon, author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep and Three Things About Elsie)
"A pacy, stylish thriller in which suspense is accompanied by fist-pumping feminism and, perhaps toughest of all, hope." (The Observer)
"Pulse-quickening-tale." (Stylist)
"Scintillating." (The Sunday Times, Thriller of the Month)

An addictive, emotional tale of fertility troubles
Having listened to a LOT of Elizabeth Day's podcast work (I am a true fan girl!) I felt I could really feel her voice in this, her first piece of fiction I've read. I found it addictive and I'm about to start her next, I found her writing that great. I particularly enjoy her wide vocabulary :) It also made me realise just how very lucky I am to have fallen pregnant naturally twice - something I thought I was very grateful for, but this book made me even more grateful and I will be even more supportive to any friends with fertility issues as a result 💜

Just OK
I was looking forward to this after reading the other author hype. Does have a good twist, but it is revealed early on and doesn’t feel at all realistic.
A lot of focus on fertility and infertility which I’m not sure is acutely represented. But, overall a good listen. I particularly liked some of the descriptive language, but have to admit at some points I wish the story had just hurried up a bit.

Excellently narrated novel
What a superb job Tanya Reynolds did narrating this book with different accents for the various characters and injecting oodles of ooomph into the dialogues. It felt almost like a play. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

An amazingly read thrilling story
I loved it. Both the way it's read by super talented Tanya Reynolds and the compelling writing style. The story is gripping, deep and complex, leaving you wanting more. Best novel I've read/listened to in the last few years.

Well read audible to keep you listening
Not quite what I was expecting but enjoyed it non the less. More about the complexities of surrogacy with some twists.
Thought it was very well read which can make all the difference!

Alright
Got off to a slow start. It had an interesting middle section but it felt like not much happened at the end.

Outstanding
I couldn't stop listening, gripping... emotionally captivating. One of those books that you are sad to get to the finish line. I can't wait to see the TV Series.
