Maigret shrugged his shoulders, buried his hands in his pockets and went off without answering. He had just spent one of the most wretched days in his life. For hours, in his corner he had felt old and feeble, without idea or incentive. But now a tiny flame flickered. 'You bet we'll see' he growled.

Maigret's peaceful retirement in the countryside is disrupted when a relative unwittingly embroils himself in a crime he did not commit, and the inspector returns to Police Headquarters in Paris once again. This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret Returns.

Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret books, his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

Maigret's (Simenon 's) use of psychology is put to wonderful use in this magnificent novel. I'm not certain there is any writer who can evince so clear an image in the mind's eye, in so few words, as the great George Simenon. His descriptions seem so sparing, yet you can clearly see every detail of a room, a face, an environment, a character by his use of deceptively "simple" language. Then, when it comes to "the psychology" as his equally great fictional character of detection - Monsieur Hercule Poirot, the famous Belgian - says, his exposition is expressed with the precision of a dart hitting a bullseye. I've come to Simenon later in life having never been overly impressed by the televisual presentations of this brilliant fictional character. Read or listen to the books first because no one has ever done Maigret or Simenon justice on screen.

Retired from the police and acting in a highly unofficial capacity Maigret goes off the rails. Drinking at all hours of the day and night, he sets out to expose a gang of hardened crooks and their amoral mastermind. Excellently voiced by Gareth Armstrong this production is vivid in its evocation of Maigret's Loire valley retirement retreat, the flesh pots of Montmartre and its unsavoury cast of characters. We enjoyed it!
