About this listen

Maigret is called to the home of professional gambler Felix Nahour, who has been found shot dead by his chambermaid. Maigret is shocked to recognise a photo of the man's wife, who becomes the main suspect. All signs point to her guilt, but Maigret suspects there might be more to this complicated affair.

This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret on the Defensive.

My review of anything by George Simenon is covered by the heading - the man was a true literary genius. I've never read any author who can cause such high tension with such driving pace in so few words: a truly remarkable feat by a master, read by a master narrator.

Simenon was a genius

Another excellent Maigret story. This is a sort of Crime Passionelle, although that term is never used. It’s a complex story of a couple of different nationalities; she is Dutch, he is Lebanese. It is a strange relationship (aren’t most?) whose lives include various other people, with ties to gambling syndicates and Middle Eastern banks. All of this takes quite a bit of sorting out by Maigret as those involved all seem to have their own reasons to not tell the truth. Who was involved in the shooting and who were onlookers, and who claims not to have been present at all. Simenon, as ever, just seems to have the knack of letting his characters share information at just the right moment. The truth of the situation here only becomes clear right at the very end with a brief report of the court case.

An intriguing murder mystery.

Whilst of course reading the book without audible there is no doubt the subtle nuances & observations, Maigret’s dialogue would deliver the same pleasure, Armstrong however adds something extra. Like all interpretations some voices, or actors in film & TV occasionally there just is a perfect match.

Simenon & Armstrong deliver again
