Most relevant  
All the Maigret stories are of a similar length, but this one seemed shorter than others. I found the title a little misleading. Most of the characters are certainly older, but the detective’s problem is actually not their age per se, but the attitudes that the upper classes have, which become more noticeable as they age. Maigret is really a working class man, and finds the diffident manner and attitudes of the upper classes a real pain. He thinks that he’s solved the case (finally), but there’s a twist that, logically, was foreseeable, but I didn’t see it coming.
Gareth Armstrong’s narration is as fine as ever, so no worries there.
While it’s good to see Maigret dealing with a different social class, for me it was a slight mis-step on the plot side. The good thing about these stories is that they don’t outstay their welcome, even if it makes them a tad expensive. Please, Audible, negotiate with the publisher for omnibus editions!

This is a good story. An old man shot, a life long love affair and an obstinant house keeper all keep Maigret frustrated at finding out the truth. The ending is a bit of a dissapointment. I had concocted a much more interesting end to the plot, but my solution might not have been acceptable to Simenon's readership at the time! If the story is ever re-booted for a modern audience, you know where to find me Audible!

Beautifully voiced, as always, the denouement of the story is a real whodunit with a whip smart reversal in the last moments. Simenon was truly a literary genius who could pack into 3.5 hours what other writers couldn't put in a bookcase of novels. Simply wonderful characterization, psychology and deep humanity.

This was one to forget, as you find every now and again with Georges Simenon. In fact it was highly unbelievable and, as it wore on, rather aggravating. I was glad when the whole, rather depressing tale, ended. However, as always. the narration by Gareth Armstrong was a joy.
