Summary

'Maigret had never been comfortable in certain circles, among the wealthy bourgeoisie where he felt clumsy and awkward.... Built like a labourer, Oscar Chabut had hauled himself up into this little world through sheer hard work and, to convince himself that he was accepted, he felt the need to sleep with most of the women.'

When a wealthy wine merchant is shot in a Paris street, Maigret must investigate a long list of the ruthless businessman's enemies before he can get to the sad truth of the affair.

The essence of Paris

This story like the other Maigret stories are beautiful and thank goodness there are a whole collection to listen to.

Maigret the magnificent.

Wonderful narration as always of a wonderful crime story by a wonderful author. Simenon never fails to rise to the occasion with his brilliant literary creation. He also imbues every novel with French vitality, looking more intensely at the underbelly and the seediness of the "upper" classes of French society. He never fails in his description of the loose mores of French life, without a judgemental eye, which makes Maigret a quintessential creation of a brilliant French writer.

True audiobook pleasure as always.

The atmosphere of Paris and the era is beautifully brought into your senses. The sage like quality of Maigret is perfection delivered by Armstrong.

Another Single Suspect Story

This time, Maigret conducts the investigation while in the grip of flu.
Gareth Armstrong’s narration is, once again, excellent. He really is a pleasure to listen to and brings the text to life.
The story is very gentle - almost a cosy mystery: Mrs Maigret is there at times, and so are the regular team of inspectors to ask “What do we do now chief?” or say “Yes, chief” or to drive Maigret from A to B and sit in the car (or bar) while Maigret interviews a witness. It’s all cosy stuff.

Hokey , Dreary and poorly read

I suspect this is not one of Simeon's finest - seems to be late in his career. Ladles out the tropes in a desultory fashion. I'd read an early Maigret and it was very interesting. This was just laboured and boring. The narrator came up with some quite bizarre and ill fitting voices and failed to inject much character into just about anybody.

I did like the constant references to drink and what went best with the food Maigret was eating.

I may try another - but not with this narrator
