About this listen

Maigret sets the record straight and tells the story of his own life, giving a rare glimpse into the mind of the great inspector - and the writer who would immortalise him. 'I can still see Simenon coming into my office the next day, pleased with himself, displaying even more self-confidence, if possible, than before, but nevertheless with a touch of anxiety in his eyes.... He trumpeted these last words as if they were a sensational discovery. Making it seem truer than life, that's the crux of it. Well, I've made you truer than life.'

Magnets memoirs

A novel idea to let Maigret tell his own story. Maigret and Simenon swap roles. It fills in some background but it is always going to be less interesting and more contrived than a new case.

Meh

Gareth Armstrong's narration is as on point as always - sheer perfection. The story IS a Maigret memoir where Maigret speaks as a "real" French detective of a fictional author - Georges Simenon! - expounding on how the author doesn't capture his full essence as Maigret speaks fondly of his life, his wife and the many criminals he has encountered and jailed! It's altogether very, very novel in clearly expressing the true opinions of Georges Simenon on critics, crime, the criminal system, society and authorship. A surprising but still very worthy and worthwhile "read".

It's not a Maigret mystery.

A different Maigret book but very interesting. Answered some questions about timelines and how sequentially the books seem out of order. Gave background to Maigret. Very enjoyable

Interesting backstory to the series

It covered all the details we already knew from listening to other stories. A good theory but boring, unlike all the many excellent Maigret audio books of which I have many.

Nothing new
