About this listen

Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was 13. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

The story is so moving, beautifully written and I just didn't want to stop listening.
It is well narrated and told with real emotion.
I can't recommend it highly enough.

Just beautiful

I read this book years ago and really enjoyed it, but in the years that have pasted I’ve faced unimaginable loss personally and weirdly listening to it now as an audiobook has given me a far greater appreciation of just beautifully this book deals with loss in its many forms and the impact on those affected. The narration is just wonderful and brought this book to life… it’s just left me wondering why had this amazing story never been adapted to a screen play or film !!

A beautiful story of love.

It was so good to listen to a story that was not just a romance, following a typical romantic trope and was so much more.
I did miss a description of physical intimacy between the two main characters at the end, which I think would have added to the story but it was so refreshing not to have repeated graphic sex scenes, which become repetitive and, quite frankly, boring.
The story was well written, with well drawn characters who quickly became loved. The theme of love, friendship, loss, resilience, disability and “what is a hero” was deep and moving and made me think of my life in a different context.
Particular mention to Bailey who was an amazing character. I have never cried like this when reading any book ever. Some of the passages of writing were memorable eg Ambrose’s eulogy speech.
As for the narrator Rob Shapiro, he was outstanding and his voice acting was superb. As he was new to me, I looked him up as a narrator and he is not just a fiction or romance narrator but has narrated many non fiction books as well.
I am paying this book the ultimate compliment and buying a paper back to read and keep and treasure.
Thank you Audible for putting “Making Faces” in the Plus Catalogue, because I would not have found it otherwise, and thank you, Amy Harmon for writing this lovely story.

Beautiful and tender

This story is carefully woven and once finished the delicate threads remain with you. It can be summarised so easily however it is the unveiling of the characters that draws you in and leaves you with a sense of loss when the book is finished. So simply written, at the heart of the story it is about love in its many forms and true beauty and heroism. Worth reading

wise and insightful

Beautiful story, beautifully read. Well worth reading. It may perhaps seem like women's fiction but any thoughtful man will benefit from reading it.

The narration is brilliant

Beautiful Contemporary coming of age / romance. It gave me all the feels the main characters have so much to contend with.
At time of listening it’s available in the plus catalogue

Blown away by a fantastic book/audio

This book wrecked me - it's such a beautiful story and has so many great and important characters that weave together to create a group of people that support one of the most beautiful love stories I've read/heard, and Fern/Ambrose story just wouldn't exist without them.

Without doubt one of the best books in this genre - completely loved it.
