Erik Cain joined the marines to get off death row. The deal was simple; enlist to fight in space and he would be pardoned for all his crimes.

Was so hopeful this would be good. Nope lacking on all parts. Could have been so much better. Story has no depth at all, no interactions no characterisations ,nothing just one long plodding description. Narator drones on in the same monotone.
Overall just save your money and time, go paint a wall and watch it dry it will be more entertaining.

Stale and boring.

Cruddy cardboard souless senseless dull ... boooooredom! I can honestly say that my review counts for only half the sto....r.. - no I just can't say it. How someone becomes a marine. A boring one. There's no character to latch on to - even in the characters. No politics, relationships. The events aren't even events, they are like the scenary that passes by the window when your head is pressed against the window of a train. Except if I was listening to this while I was doing that, I would do what I did and just stop listening. I took in a whole download. I could do no more.

The performance was dire too. Imagine a californian high school drop out reading a childs novel for an 8 year old with the odd swear word just to prove its not even for kids. Sometimes when you ask a question your voice goes up at the end of the sentance. Now imagine someone who talks like that - not just in every.normal.sentance! but also pitches up the question tone as much as after every 4 or 5 words. like, you know what I mean? Like, seriosly? like, yer - all the time? even though? this isn't even a? fricken question!?!?! Waaaaaahhhh... I'm only writing this review in hope that maybe, just maybe, I can save YOU.

I can't see any enjoyment in this book. Totally lacking a plot and absolutely no listener engagement.

Has Marines: Crimson Worlds put you off other books in this genre?

No. But I would not purchase any other books by this author or narrator.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jeff Bower?

The guy who reads the Lost Fleet series but this would not make up for the lack of a plot or storyline.

Just Wasted A 'Credit'

This is very much a book of two halves. It starts of very promising, lots of action as the main character engages in battles in an 'iron man-esque' super suit. Also very interesting is the history and background story of the main character. However, at about the half way point the book takes a massive downturn as the hero seems to get promoted every twenty minutes and each promotion takes him further from the action. Basically for the latter half of the book our 'hero' spends his time behind a desk and from then on the book consists mainly of political discussions and limps along to a very anti climactic and unsatisfying ending.

Very little story, just a list of battles.
Narration was particularly disappointing. The female marines sounded like a squeaky version of Michael Jackson and the Secret Group at the end of the book, who were supposed to be very scarey sounded like a kids cartoon characters. It's not necessary to make every character sound very different, this was the problem the narrator chose to solve but did not achieve it.
