About this listen
A sweeping Christian fiction epic, Maximus is part mystery, part detective story, and filled with intrigue.
General Maximus is a battle-weary commander of one of Rome's finest legions. When he returns from a long, bloody campaign, he finds himself questioning his life. Word has reached Rome of a man named Jesus, who is causing a stir in faraway Judea. Maximus, disguised as a Jew, is sent to investigate the situation and assess his potential threat to Rome. In this innovative rendering of the story of Christ, we see Jesus from the perspective of an outsider. Stripped of his cultural identity, Maximus is therefore free to ponder whether he can believe Jesus and find a new purpose in his own life.

Christian novel
Refreshing to hear a roman historical novel which doesn't emphasise violence and is reflexive.

Not my usual book but good.
Not my usual type of book, but I enjoyed it once I accepted the strong American accent of Adam Verner who was good, actually. I liked the different voices he did.
It was interesting to hear Jesus's story from an unusual perspective.

Quite a nice surprise after all
At first I did not like the reader’s voice at all, but then got used to him and his personifications were quite good. The story was most interesting and learning of the different point of view of both Romans and Judeans was captivating.

Needs More Historical Knowledge
the narrative flows well enough, but it is clear the author has limited understanding and knowledge of the historical period. other than the broadest outlines. There is a rather crude 'ahistorical' implanting of later century concepts and even post 18th century CE, ideas.

Good yarn, well researched.
The story line is very good, The novel largely sticks to history, and the changes to add the fictional characters to the crucifixion scene work surprisingly well. There are a couple of historical inaccuracies - the tutor of Maximus would have been Greek or Greek trained and thus very capable of subtle philosophy, and any Jew would have known Gentiles can join Israel through circumcision, so the marriage was not as big an issue as the storyline makes out - although it adds to its effectiveness!

Interesting
This is a very good telling of the crucifixion from a Roman perspective. The story is softened by the complicated love story that evolves between the two different parties. This is a good all rounder encompassing adventure, action, history, love and (for me) the most important part the telling of the last few days of Jesus before his resurrection. It's very well narrated and is a joy to listen to. I will be trying other books by the same author.

Loved it!
A fresh view of the bible times from the standpoint of a Roman general. some elements weren't quite factually right, but hey, it's fiction

Maximus
A brilliantly written and well read story of two Romans finding Christ and accepting Him as their Saviour. My only criticism is that the story cries out for a sequel as the ending leaves things a little bit in mid-air but, nevertheless, I highly recommend it
