whilst the story is no doubt interesting, the narration is very wooden and therefore quite annoying. i gave up after 7 hours.

The book itself is great, very interesting and very in depth.
However I do find the narrator to be a bit difficult to get into, it almost sounds like he is an AI and they're using snippets of his voice patched together but I believe this his real talking voice.
Once you get past that though, he's great.


If you are into history and want something more in depth, then I highly recommend this audio book!

Great if you want to know a lot about the post Auschwitz life and hunt for Mengela. But it jumped about a bit on that front and repeated same periods of time.

Although Bruce Mann has won awards cor his narration, i just couldn't get used to his voice at all. Putting that aside the story is riveting. Although some may require a strong stomach to get past the first two chapters. Great listen.

Mangele was certainly a psychopath allevated to a position of power and authority over millions of disempowered people in the Death Camps. He appears to have escaped by sheer luck from the Allies in a manner that did not involve direct help from the Catholic Church - although he did traverse through Italy on his way to South America. If the Vatican did help him (like it did with Klaus Barbie and many others) the author remains quiet about it - but then, the author remains quiet about a number of issues. The USSR cut off diplomatic relations with Israel in 1952 following alleged terrorist activities. In 1956, Israeli operatives were caught planting bombs in US and UK owned cinemas in Egypt. The plan was to explode the devices and blame Palestinians for the deaths. The USSR reestablished diplomatic relations in 1956 before finally cutting them off again in 1967 due to Israeli military aggression. In 1967 the Israeli Airforce deliberately attacked and bombed the USS Liberty whilst sailing in international waters. In 1975, the UN published its findings stating that Zionism is a form of White Supremacy, etc.. As the author feels the need to side track into the history of Mossad and the activities of Israel to fill the space, I thought I would provide some 'balance' for the reader to research - as a large section of this book is taken up with the interesting but irrelevant subject of Adolf Eichman (as we are discussing Mangele). This is because there are large gaps in the known history of Mangele. Nazi War Criminals deserve everythung they get and I support their hunting, arrest, trial and imprisonment - although those who are now left are probably too old to be executed if we wish to retain the moral upper hand.

Very informative but the narrator is very monotone and pronounces foreign words with their native accent which can be off-putting

This is a very good book, and audio book. There are some who are quite harsh in their criticism of the narrator, but this is a factual book, not a drama. It needs a neutral and factual narration. Only thing is that at some points the narrator could have practised the names of some characters a bit more.

The story itself is very detailed, and aside form painting a good picture of Mengele, it also details the chaotic chase for him, as well as Simon Wiesenthal's imaginative stories about his claimed close encounters with Mengele.

A must-read for any holocaust and WW2 buff.

A really interesting book, with great insight into the upbringing and character of Mengele, but utterly ruined by the robotic and toneless narration. I couldn't finish the audiobook because of the awful narration but I got the actual book instead and it's definitely worth reading. However, I would never buy anything narrated by this individual again. Very disappointing.
