Adam Dalgliesh, un des plus fins limiers de Scotland Yard, a reçu une lettre d'un vieil ami qui l'invite à lui rendre visite. Lorsqu'il arrive à Toynton Manor – l'institution pour handicapés dont son ami est l'aumônier -, Dalgliesh apprend une triste nouvelle : le père Baddeley est mort et enterré.
