About this listen
Father and son Landyn and Vale Midwinter are men of the land: Suffolk farmers. Times are hard as they struggle to sustain their property, livelihood and heritage in the face of competition from big business.
But an even bigger, more brutal fight is brewing: a fight between each other about the horrible death of Cecelia, beloved wife and mother, in Zambia 10 years earlier. A past they have both refused to confront - until now.
©2016 Fiona Melrose (P)2016 W.F. Howes LtdAfter Vale is involved in a horrific accident with his childhood friend Tom, his relationship with Landyn deteriorates even further and it threatens to destroy his frienships and future. As Tom recovers and Vale falls apart, Landyn reflects on their life in Zambia and the events leading up to his wife's death. Who was to blame? Himself or the man jailed for his part in the crime. And why can he not help Vale to cope without his mother?
On face value this novel seems to be a simple tale of family, friendship and broken relationships. But it is much more than that. It has hidden depths and sucks you in to its magic so that you really care for the characters and hope for their redemption. I was sad when it ended and I would love there to be a sequel.
The narration could have been more varied and the voices were not always convincing; but overall this did not spoil the story for me.
A sad tale of grief, sorrow, friendship & family.
