About this listen
Six months after the unexpected death of her husband, Carmel-by-the-Sea’s deputy chief of police, Millie Dickens is still trying to come to terms with her loss.
After learning that her husband was falsely identified as the chief investigating officer for a botched police investigation into a double murder that took place the year before, she sets aside her grief to revisit the investigation on behalf of the victims’ son.
While pursuing her quest, Millie begins to suspect that her husband’s death was no accident. She discovers he had been working undercover to expose a tangled web of corruption, drug-smuggling, and human trafficking on the Central California coast.
As she stitches together the disparate threads of her late husband’s investigation, she identifies a pattern that leads her directly to the office of Carmel's Chief of Police.

Thoroughly enjoyed this!
I’m excited to read more of Millie’s adventures. I loved the characters and the story. There was just one thing that I couldn’t quite put my finger on that lowered the rating… I think it might be about the pacing of the story… otherwise a fab read. Thank you for my review copy, it was a privilege ☺️

Easy listen
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the beginning felt a little slow but built up the story and characters really well. I enjoyed the narration as it was clear and not over doing the accents . A good story with a few surprises, not obvious to know the plot which is good. I would recommend the author. A good story with lots of facts.

Great first solo outing for Millie
My first Phyllis Entis novel, and certainly won’t be my last was a little worried at first as it took me a while to warm to Millie, but I needn’t have worried I loved her relationship with Hershey and really enjoyed getting to know her and her back story can’t wait for the next instalment to see what Millie gets involved in next

A good listen - devoured in two days
I had no preconceptions when I started listening to this book and I hadn’t researched the author or her previous work so it took a little while for me to settle in. Once things started to take off I was hooked and wanted to stay with it as the story unfolded. It’s a good story and although it’s clear who the bad guys are, the author surprises with each reveal. I’m definitely going to dip into the preceding series about the main character’s husband based on this listen. It’s definitely got my recommendation if you like good old fashioned investigative mysteries.
