Summary

Bonus material! Includes an excerpt from John Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s Obsession!

Discover the classic behind-the-scenes chronicle of John E. Douglas' 25-year career in the FBI Investigative Support Unit, where he used psychological profiling to delve into the minds of the country's most notorious serial killers and criminals - the basis for the upcoming Netflix original series.

In chilling detail, the legendary Mindhunter takes us behind the scenes of some of his most gruesome, fascinating, and challenging cases - and into the darkest recesses of our worst nightmares.

During his 25-year career with the Investigative Support Unit, Special Agent John Douglas became a legendary figure in law enforcement, pursuing some of the most notorious and sadistic serial killers of our time: the man who hunted prostitutes for sport in the woods of Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle's Green River killer, the case that nearly cost Douglas his life.

As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed, and studied scores of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein, who dressed himself in his victims' peeled skin. Using his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey, Douglas examines each crime scene, reliving both the killer's and the victim's actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves.

Thank God someone can face the bogeyman

Horrifying and fascinating in equal measure. John doesn't sugarcoat the dreadful crimes perpetrated; he doesn't glorify them either. This is 100% real life, and death.

One Of His Best

This is one of the best John Douglas & Mark Olshaker audiobooks. I’ve listened to a few and this just tops the rest as it described the start of the BSU or ISU ( Investigative Support Unit ) as it’s called now.

John describes his life out and within the unit but not overly about his home life. He talks about how he and his team came about creating profiles and used them with conjunction with police forces in the USA and Worldwide.

Does John talk about himself a lot in this book and I’d say yes BUT he has too as he’s describing his job, how he feels, how he profiles etc he has to include himself most the time and he does give value to his colleagues that helped form the ISU.

If you’re a True Crime fan I’d highly recommend this audiobook. ( I never knew it was again now as I’d been searching for his audiobooks on Audible search function, I just stumbled across this last week and I’m glad I did…I bought it straight away as I’d known this is one of his best books

The narrator is the man himself John Douglas and he rings this to life as he done everything within the audiobook and brings it across with his great voice.

John Douglas is the behavioural science unit

Love the Netflix show but reading how it was working for the FBI by a real agent in his own words is fascinating. Highly recommend if you like true crime.

Overview of the BSU

Engaging story, well narrated. Douglas charts the rise of psychology and the importance of childhood in reading perpetrators.

Fascinating inwight

Very interesting listen. Really scathingbtake on forensic mental health services and shocking use of the DSM by police trying to diagnose mental health conditions. Luckily things have moved on and this is still a really fascinating account of a very pioneering team in rh FBI.

more of an autobiography of his life

this was more of an autobiography rather than discussing cases in detail, very disappointing after reading such good reviews
