About this listen

Never underestimate a librarian.

Intelligent cosy crime with razor-sharp wit and an unlikely hero, for fans of P.G. Wodehouse and Muriel Spark

Shona McMonagle is back, once again personally selected by Marcia Blaine, founder of her alma mater, the Marcia Blaine School for Girls – this time for a crucial mission involving time travel, Macbeth, the Weird Sisters and a black cat.

Unsure which version of history she’s in – and fully aware of Shakespeare’s egregious inaccuracies - Shona tries to figure out who she’s here to save. But between playing the Fool and being turned into a mouse, things don’t always go her way. Shona’s expertise in martial arts is put to the test as family tensions rise and fingers are pointed for murder.

Can Shona unravel the mystery in time to complete her mission? Never underestimate a librarian!

Highly entertaining and beautifully narrated

This is the third book in the Miss Blaine’s Prefect series, but the first to be released as an audiobook as well as in print. Do not worry if you are not familiar with the previous two titles - the story stands alone but also includes just enough recapping of the context to allow the listener to get into the narrative immediately.

In this book, Olga Wojtas’s time-travelling librarian Shona is sent back to eleventh century Scotland on a mysterious mission and finds herself plunged into the story of Macbeth. Unsure of what she is meant to be doing there, but as full of self-confidence as ever, Shona suffers mishaps and confronts dangers while cracking jokes that range from the erudite to the ridiculous.

The narration, by Ms Wojtas herself, is excellent and adds an extra element of humour to the already very entertaining story. It is to be hoped that her publisher will release the previous two stories in audio form as well.

Engrossed

I like Olga's books and would like her to narrate her others. She becomes all eleven characters bringing them to life in an amusing manner. There even was some Luna Lovegood in one of the witches.

Shona is quintessentially Edinburgh Morningside. A librarian educated at Marcia Blaine School (Miss Jean Brodie's School).
She is has become a time traveller sent by Marcia Blaine to sort out problems which are not always apparent to Shona.
In this book she goes back to the time of MacBeth, but has not been briefed as to why she is there. She meets the three witches, MacBeth and King Duncan, history is not quite what it seems, but when is it ever? Mishap, mayhem and misunderstandings are all resolved satisfactorily by the end.
My favourite character overall was the many named cat. He is a typical cat who is his own being with more that one "owner".

This book had me smiling many times, giggling and the occasional outright laugh.
