Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Moonfleet by J. Meade Falkner, read by Royce Pierreson.

A
tale of smuggling set among the cliffs, caves, and downs of Dorset.

Everyone in the tiny village of Moonfleet lives by the sea one way or another, so it's no surprise when young John Trenchard gets involved in the smuggling trade. Forced to flee England with a price on his head, John little guesses the adventures and trials he will have before he sees Moonfleet again or the change in his fortunes when he does.

Traditional Adventure Story

Lots of action, great plot. Perhaps a little 'of its time', but a good, fun read.

Superb! Absolutely superb!

For me audiobooks seldom keep my attention grasped long enough so that I may fully enjoy a story through, without having to keep going back to chapters and listen to the same parts several times.
However, no such experience was had with this audiobook.
The story itself is an enjoyable family classic. Fun to listen to and made all the easier with the narrator being brilliant.
Wonderfully told by Royce Pierreson. Kept me hanging on to every word! Bravo Sir, please do more!

A ripping yarn which kept us spellbound throughout

One of the best classic thrillers ever. Although the language was a bit of a challenge at times, my 9 year old and I were glued to this incredibly exciting story. We looked forwards to get in the car and listen together - long motorway journeys became a voyage through Blackbeard's tomb, Dorset mines and smuggler's cliff-top paths. Finished and now immediately missing it. Enjoy!

Why Not Indeed!

I've clocked up a fair few audible books now and Moonfleet ranks as one of my absolute favourites. The story is intriguing, gripping and moves with a wonderful taut pace throughout.

J Meade Falkner was a quite brilliant novelist and deserves a much higher profile (the author and historian A. N. Wilson is a big fan - see his article about Meade Falkner in December 2018's The Spectator).

I am puzzled as to why Moonfleet is seemingly categorised as a young adult book - for sure, it is perfectly accessible to that age group but as an adult I found it as stimulating and thought-provoking as any fiction aimed at an older reader.

Whilst my admiration for the author knows no bounds, I must also mention the utterly fantastic narrator here, Royce Pierreson. From what I can see, Mr Pierreson appears to forging himself a pretty successful acting career right now. But if that ever dries up he surely has a lucrative alternative job as a much-in-demand narrator of audible books. In Moonfleet, he is truly sublime, bringing to life the many varied characters with real emotion and drama. (Note for Mr Pierreson's agent: get your client some more audible book contracts now. He is an amazing reader!).

So, a great book and a great narrator.

Audible: In respect of the author, you have him, for this reading, listed as 'John Meade Falkner'. But he is also shown on your site as 'J. Meade Falkner'. The consequence of this is that Mr Pierreson's wonderful reading is listed entirely alone and not within the seven other audible books by 'J. Meade Falkner' (as he is more usually known). You need to be consistent in your listings or you create these unhelpful anomalies. The separation and isolation of Mr Pierreson's reading (through sloppy listing) may explain why, up until now, it has not been reviewed - and that's a real shame.

A lovely story of adventure, fate and friendship

A 19th century story of a boy who is taken into a smuggler's care who looks after him as his son. The boy is intrigued by the old stories of Blackbeard's treasure and the two go on the hunt for it after falling foul of the law. Thereafter the story, while unlikely, is interesting and brings out themes of greed, superstition, betrayal, friendship and fate.
It mostly has a happy ending. It's an uplifting story although quite straightforward compared with the plots of modern stories but very listenable all the same. There's a moral in it for all of us to ponder.

wow what a story! What an exciting tale, fantastic

I absolutely loved this story and Royce Pierreson narrated it superbly. Fantastic story and so well narrated which made it so exciting. I have never read this book and remember vaguely seeing the film on TV years ago, but what a treat to listen to such a fantastically narrated story making all the characters truly come life. It really held my attention all the way through every twist and turn and actually bought me to tears at the end. Highly recommended and I want more from Royce Pierreson amazing job.
