Summary
In Jilly Cooper's latest, raciest novel, Rupert Campbell-Black takes centre stage in the cutthroat world of flat racing.
Rupert is consumed by one obsession: that Love Rat, his adored grey horse, be proclaimed champion stallion. He longs to trounce Roberto's Revenge, the stallion owned by his detested rival, Cosmo Rannaldini, which means abandoning his racing empire at Penscombe and his darling wife, Taggie, and chasing winners in the richest races worldwide, from Dubai to Los Angeles to Melbourne.
Luckily the fort at home is held by Rupert's assistant, Gav, a genius with horses, fancied by every stable lass but damaged by alcoholism and a vile wife. When Gala, a grieving but ravishing Zimbabwean widow moves to Penscombe as carer for Rupert's wayward father, it is not just Gav who is attracted to her: a returning Rupert finds himself dangerously tempted.
Gala adores horses, and when she switches to working in the yard, her carer's job is taken by a devastatingly handsome South African man who claims to be gay but seems far keener on caring for the angelic Taggie. And as increasingly sinister acts of sabotage strike at Penscombe, the game of musical loose boxes gathers apace....

Just what the doctor ordered
A wonderful treat for all Jilly Cooper fans. Pure escapism with classic Jilly humour and romps in the world of racing. The audio version was well read and bought to life with a variety of accents by Sian Thomas. How nice to catch up with familiar old characters as well as enjoying the introduction of some new heroes and villains.

Some of the pronunciation was well off!
Great yomp but the narrator was terrible lots of jarring mistakes so no way as enjoyable as it should have been all round disappointing.
Had to give performance a star rating my preference would have been zero!

Okay but not her best.
RCB may be back, but this book falls very short of Cooper's early genius. Couldn't connect with any of the new characters and positively disliked Gala when I think she was supposed to be a heroine. Such a shame because her early books are still some of my favourites. I guess you can't win 'em all. Will still continue to be a fan though.

Not as good as Rivals and Riders
Sadly Mount didn’t compare with Jilly’s much earlier Rutshire books- it was far too long and just lacked the magic. It was good to hear about characters from previous books but killing off Billy was a mistake. To me the worst thing was Rupert being unfaithful to Taggie. The narration was good but I preferred the narrator of Rivals . Good- but not great.

I.have enjoyed listening to this but not the best
The narrator does a fab job of bringing this to life, but I didn't feel like this was up there with the greats of Riders or even some of the later ones. There were only 2 really surprising moments in the whole thing, the relationship that seemed to come from nowhere really and the discovery by one of the dogs (trying not to spoiler too much!). The rest was very predictable, which is a shame. I have enjoyed a thorough revisit of Rupert and Tagged, rather than having him come and deus ex the end as previous books have done, but I definitely would recommend starting with the older novels if you are new to Jilly.

Fabulous.
Jilly Cooper never fails to hold my attention with her novels. Samantha Bond proved herself as a first class actor. The voices and accents were sublime.

Beautifully read ...
A right rollicking story in true Jilly Cooper style... lots of characters to keep up with and the action is fast moving . A little too many corny quips , all rather too obvious, but lovely to catch up with all the old characters... I love how she humanises the horses and dogs...
The narrator is particularly clever to keep up with all the different accents, she keeps it all alive.
