About this listen

Four brilliant investigators combine forces to outwit an insidious master of online mind control in a gripping thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Final Equinox.

Investigator Sloan McPherson finds a frightened vagrant suffering from amnesia living in a Florida swamp—then learns he disappeared from Oregon when he was a teenager. To find out how he ended up three thousand miles from home thirty years later, Sloan enlists the help of two brilliant colleagues.

FBI agent Jessica Blackwood and scientist Theo Cray have already made an alarming connection. A female classmate of the Everglades drifter disappeared at the same time, and their high school journals reveal ties to an enigmatic figure they both called Mr. Whisper. Under his influence they did as they were told. The case is also attracting the attention of corporate security expert Brad Trasker, whose trail is leading to the dark heart of a master manipulator.

Jessica, Theo, Sloan, and Brad must now bring their unique skills to the table to take down a diabolical adversary. Unless Mr. Whisper’s decades-long control of the vulnerable is too powerful and far-reaching to stop.

Critic reviews

“Multiple narrators tell the story from each investigator's perspective, also voicing the familiar characters from the original series. These narration choices create strong characterizations and provide continuity for returning listeners. The ensemble of narrators helps create clear character differentiation as the story shifts point of view. Their performances are solid, forming likable and believable characters. The narrators' voices complement each other well and build on their connections to the characters, creating an engaging listen.”AudioFile Magazine

Can’t wait for the next Specialists book to be released. Listened to it in one go! Cleared my schedule for it. Theo being my favourite character, didn’t disappoint and I love the relationship between him and the wonderful Jessica. Fiery Sloan and cool Brad following up the rear. Excellent storyline, and expertly narrated Mr.Whisper won’t disappoint.
My only critique would be the ending felt rushed and cut off, I felt it ended far to abruptly considering the level of detail and attention to detail in all Andrew Maynes other books, of which I have read them all. I was left with the feeling of what?? How?? Huh?? I’m hoping for a reference to the ending in the next book. This is actually my first review with any negativity for Mr.Maynes work. So not a bad record. Please keep your amazing talent for story telling coming Mr. Mayne, your work is absorbing, imaginative, intelligent and thought provoking. Not the usual American crime thrillers at all.

Having these four characters working together! Mr. Whisper was excellent as all Andrew Maynes characters are

I’m not sure if the author was genuinely experimenting or trying to be clever but this is an absolute mess. Multiple timelines and narrators are confusing enough but there are so many unanswered questions and at the end the author themselves seemed to get bored and just sketched an ending. A very irritating listen.

What a mess
