About this listen

Yasmin’s career is finally taking off. After years of fighting for visibility in the theater, the British-Pakistani actress lands the eponymous role of Mrs. Bibi—the ultimate aunty-ji—in a hit primetime sitcom. Her newfound success means a steady paycheck, the possibility of owning her own home, and a carefree fling with a charming young assistant director.

But when her estranged sister arrives with news of their mother, Yasmin's hard-won stability is shaken to its core. Forced to reckon with her ambitions, her family’s needs, and her place in an industry that both elevates and exploits her identity, Yasmin’s world tilts in unexpected ways.

From laugh-out-loud sitcom banter to powerful personal reckonings, Mrs. Bibi by Waleed Akhtar is a surprising, bold, and poignant audio drama that reveals the complexities of navigating personal success while balancing family and identity.

Directed by Tessa Walker with sound design by Tim Kim and Holly Khan and original music by Niraj Chan.

Playwright Waleed Akhtar was awarded a commission through the Audible Emerging Playwrights Fund, an initiative dedicated to developing innovative original plays driven by language and voice. As an Audible-commissioned playwright, he received funding and creative support to develop Mrs. Bibi.

Felt the characters and world was really well fleshed out - super interesting the story with her mum and quite heartbreaking in parts. Loved how the TV show satirised her real laugh pain - the laugh track felt quite sinister in the part she was crying out for help. A good listen!

Great storyline

I really enjoyed Ms Bibi”s audio. The rap was fantastic -funny, yet with some emotional and serious moments that really resonated. The storyline had a great balance, with lots of humour to lighten the mood. Definitely a great listen. Highly recommend

I’ve long admired Waleed Akhtar’s work across the London theatre scene, and Mrs Bibi is yet another testament to his extraordinary storytelling. This production is rich with emotional depth, layered nuance, and moments of genuine humour that had me laughing out loud. At its core, it’s a beautifully human story — touching, thought-provoking, and brilliantly observed. The writing is sharp yet tender, brought to life by a wonderful cast whose performances truly elevate the piece. A must-listen for fans of powerful, character-driven narratives.

The play tacked tough subject matters but with plenty of humour sprinkled in. I hope we get to hear more of Yasmin’s story.
