Summary

When writer Paul Stewart heads to the idyllic Italian town of Montalcino to finish his already late book, it seems like the perfect escape from stressful city life. Upon landing, however, things quickly take a turn for the worse when he discovers his hired car is nowhere to be found. With no record of any reservation and no other cars available, it looks like Paul is stuck at the airport. That is, until an enterprising stranger offers him an unexpected alternative.

While there may be no cars available, there is something else on offer: a bulldozer. With little choice in the matter, Paul accepts, and so begins a series of laugh-out-loud adventures through the Italian countryside, following in the wake of Paul and his Italian bulldozer. A story of unexpected circumstance and a lesson in making the best of what you have, My Italian Bulldozer is a warm holiday listen guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

A bulldozer is one way of getting around Italy

I wanted to really like this book and it's unique story. It was a little too predictable for my like.

Superbly entertaining

Lovely whimsical story, brilliantly read. Can't get enough of McCall-Smith. Everybody's idea of romantic Italy.

Excellent performance weak story

Really struggled to get through the first two chapters, it was odd hearing a man talk about a woman like the character did in the first chapter. It seems very self complimentary in an awkward way. The rest of the book does improce somewhat but for someone who was expecting the story to be about adventures on a bulldozer for it to then barely include the bulldozer was not great. In total I think the bulldozer gets used four or five times in the whole book. Also the book turns into a weird love triangle/square.

Overall I didn't find this book funny or exciting, it was a bit of a slog to get through really.

Heart warming and amusing tale.

Another beautifully crafted story from Alexander McCall Smith. How does he do it? A story that explores the human responses to love and desire, loss and belonging, and the ability to bring light and blessing into other peoples lives. I really enjoyed this book. The audible fully unabridged version with sir Timothy Ackroyd as the narrator was superb and really managed to make you feel that were in the Tuscan hills and vineyards, a sheer joy.

A virtual journey to Italy!

I could picture the scenery and almost taste the food. Andrew McCall Smith’s writing is as delightful as ever. However, I found some of the “Italian” hard to understand as it was a bit mumbled and not quite an Italian accent!

All’s well, that ends well.

A classic all’s well, that ends well story, with enough red herrings and descriptions of Tuscan life to keep you involved.

pity about the pronunciation

very amusing and complimentary to Tuscany, the narrator had a fine range of accents...unfortunately the pronunciation of Italian words was abysmal and laughable at times...

Good quality easy listening.

Gentle offbeat story (within the "go to Italy, save your sanity" genre), well written, sensible length, not everything spelled out, but not too obscured. Narration fine, albeit some dodgy accent and pronunciation decisions.
I don't always want gloomy listening, and this is cheery.

good easy book

enjoyed this book, bit silly and certainly no need to concentrate too hard as simple story line.
