About this listen

Doon Mackichan is best known for her comedy characters in the hugely popular Brass Eye, Smack the Pony and Toast of London – but throughout her career there are parts she’s refused to take and roles she’s been forced to play.

The Feisty Feminist. The Hot Lesbian. The Desperate Cougar.

In My Lady Parts, Doon shares her experience on stage, screen and in real life, examining how our culture still expects women to adhere to certain stereotypes – and punishes those who don’t. Doon looks at the stories we are telling and asks: what do these roles we give women tell us about their value in the society we live in? How do we hold our heads up without fear and say no to those that objectify us?

The Deranged Mother. The Stupid Tart. The Hag.

This is a courageous, vulnerable and empowering account of being a woman in an industry that has been exposed for its deep-rooted sexism. It is, above all, a call to reflect on – and radically rework – the implications such attitudes have for future generations.

Critic reviews

Fierce, frank and funny, this is Doon at her very best. This book demonstrates that she is, and always has been, a trailblazer (SANDI TOKSVIG)
An articulate, whole-hearted and blazing account. Doon’s been the bravest of us, someone who has consistently called out bad behaviour and unnecessary obstacles and challenged the industry to have more imagination towards women, even when doing so would cost her professionally. She’s a role model to me and many others. Required reading - made me feel angrier and determined to be braver (SALLY PHILLIPS)
A sparkling, poetic and gloriousy witty whirl through Doon's brilliant career, with moments of deep poignancy and a bracing dose of feminist ire. Loved it! (APRIL DE ANGELIS)

I've learnt a lot about women injustices in the arts

fabulous life story ...so much thrown at Doon and she's survived. Great fan of Two Doors Down which Doon didn't mention ( unless my headphones skipped a chapter on holiday ! ) But I believe in the context of the book it didn't need to be. Hopefully Doon will one day write another and mention the modern classic comedy of Two Doors ...

How accurate and fearless she is.

Doon putting into words my jumbled thoughts on stereotypes, mysoginy and younger people having to live with social media and the anxiety produced therein.

Not Funny But Bittersweet

Not sure what I expected but it wasn't this. I was sitting listening to the story of her sons leukemia when I wondered why my shirt was wet had to go home and get shopping later. Well written and read but a bit too bitter and not sugar coated

Inspiring, moving, empowering and frustrating

As a woman entering the comedy industry, it was fascinating to hear the iconic Doon's story and thoughts on the industry and its still urgent need for change. Thank you for writing this and for all your amazing work x

Laugh out loud funny but then heartbreakingly sad.

Laugh out loud funny but then heartbreakingly sad.

A little short but maybe they’ll be more in the future?

But no mention of the Currency Susan…..

A Tour de force

Missed my tram stop, transformed my weekend, uncompromisingly honest, unpausable listening. Whole heartedly recommended. Bravissima Doon!

A lady apart

Beautifully written and read. Such frustration at the patriarchy of 80’s comedy and bravery at sticking to beliefs. Very moving and hilarious observations of a life well lived so far.

Patriarchy Uncovered

Loved the pure honesty in Doon's telling and feel genuinely ashamed to be a man as a result. Having daughters, sisters and of course a mother myself, it's only really the past 5 or so years where I have started to notice all the areas women aren't placed on a level playing field and it's truly astonishing that it's pretty much every area of life. Well done Doon, keep educating our girls and empowering them to stand up and tell males to fuck off when the need calls for it.

Heartbreaking yet Inspiring!!

What a brave, heart wrenching, eye opening, inspiring and brutally honest journey of a brilliant and hilarious career and life. No matter how talented you can be as woman you are still expected to jump through multiple hoops, and worst of all question your own conduct.. “am I being the difficult woman?!” just for simply standing your ground and saying NO! Bravo Doon for being a trailblazer for not just woman in the arts, but for woman kind! A brilliant audio book! I highly recommend!
