Russland um 1900 - das sind die Jahre der ersten Massenstreiks der russischen Arbeiterbewegung. An der Seite der Unterdrückten steht der junge Dichter Peschkow, der sich später Gorki ("Der Bittere") nennt. Sein Stück Nachtasyl hatte 1903 in Moskau seine Uraufführung, schon wenige Wochen danach fand in Berlin die deutsche Erstaufführung statt. Das Stück beschreibt die Außenseiter, die Gestrandeten und Gescheiterten der russischen Gesellschaft. Inmitten dieser menschlichen Tragödien ist die Sehnsucht nach einem besseren Leben groß. Doch wo ist der Ausweg?
