Native people
Interesting topic about the native American heritage. One of the underrated ancient history that I think everyone should be curious about. Highly recommended.

An awakening of a truer history
First three quarters interesting but slow at times. Really enjoyed last quarter clarifying the impact of the white European and American on this culture who were in tune with their surroundings.

Shallow and vague
Firstly, there is very little Native American History here. The narrative skips very quickly from the original colonisation by humans to the current colonial period via a few references to “living in harmony with nature.” There was one short passage that relates a native creation story and a rote list of tribal names. That was it.
There were no examples or case studies of native societies either from archaeology, anthropology or indigenous story traditions.
What’s more, for all the authors have clearly tried to be progressive and politically correct, by perpetuating the idea that native peoples lived “in harmony with nature” without offering any detail or explanation, they drastically downplay Native American achievements and civilisation. Native America was a dynamic ecosystem of nations and tribes with complex and varied political cultures; they varied from hunter-gatherers to communities of subsistence farmers to the city of Cahokia, which had a population of 40,000 in the 12th Century.
They cleared forests, built cities, developed agriculture, engaged in politics, trade and warfare. They created the prairie. Yes the native lifestyle was a lot less impactful and damaging to the environment than what came afterwards, but this text tells us nothing about that, preferring to repeat the cliche about “balance” and “harmony.” They weren’t “noble savages” and they weren’t Tolkein’s elves treading lightly on the grass and leaving no trace - they were complex and often advanced human societies that did and achieved things.
Suffice to say I’m disappointed.
