About this listen

Narrated by actor Jason Flemyng.

The book that defined the cyberpunk movement, inspiring everything from The Matrix to Cyberpunk 2077.

The sky above the port was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel.

William Gibson revolutionised science fiction in his 1984 debut Neuromancer. The writer who gave us the matrix and coined the term 'cyberspace' produced a first novel that won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick Awards, and lit the fuse on the cyberpunk movement.

More than three decades later, Gibson's text is as stylish as ever, his noir narrative still glitters like chrome in the shadows and his depictions of the rise and abuse of corporate power look more prescient every day. Part thriller, part warning, Neuromancer is a timeless classic of modern SF and one of the 20th century's most potent and compelling visions of the future.

I'm a fan of Gibson and Neuromancer; I've read the book some years ago and wanted to revel in gritty cyberpunk retro futurism. Alas, this reading is very mediocre and seems hastily put together. The actor seems talented but I doubt they've done more than a single take of most of the recording. The emphasis is sometimes just wrong, obscuring the sense of a sentence. Accents are inconsistent. You can occasionally hear pages turning in the background and the reader seems to move closer and further from the mic from time to time. The pronunciation of Japanese words is also off (Chiba becomes "Chibba") which would wind you up if you know how it's supposed to sound. It's a shame because with a bit of direction and preparation this could have been much better.

good book, shame about the reading

The first fiction book I really wanted to have physical copy off. It was very hard to understand this story. I kept rewinding it to understand what is happening and still I vague idea what was it about.

Difficult to listen

Loved listening to this. Great energy in Jason Flemyng’s performance, really brings the narrative to life, but where is Clem Fandango when you need him? It’s “Cheeba”!

One small thing…

First read Neuromancer about 20 years back, and it's just as engaging as it ever was in 2022 - a cyberpunk future that never came true.

The narration was an interesting departure from how the characters would be expected to have spoken, but after years of listening to American narrators it was strangely charming to have a Southern English Case and Molly, Eastern European Armitage, and a Welsh Julius Deane was delightful.

I still recommend it as much as I would have two decades ago.

An Interesting Shift

This is my favourite book of all time. Everything about it just gets better with every read/listen. The narrator does a great job of differentiating the characters and portraying this world. It's an incredible story and everyone should experience it at least once.

Incredible

Really liked the reader’s accent, and great voices for the assorted characters. The central character Case was especially well presented. Incredible to think this was written in 1983, it still sounds incredibly futuristic and hasn’t dated at all.

A complex plot, needs careful attention listening, but well worth the effort. Great novel.

The tone is the same all the way through and so is the feel of the story which I couldn’t get into and I listened to it all. I am none the wiser but it seems like a hell of a journey. I’m sure it will suit those who like AI mixed with Philip marlow

Not my cup of tea

I really enjoyed the futuristic world created, incredible considering it was written in 1984. I understand why it's an influential cult classic but I found it hard to follow what was happening even after listening to some chapters twice.

Enjoyable but a little hard to follow

The narrator talks in the sleepiest, edgiest voice possible with this weird Australian? accent. It's monotone. it never changes. What makes it worse is the book is full of abrupt disorienting jumps. I started reading it to see whether the original has similar problems, but no. Listening to it, however, feels like a bad fever dream.

On the upside, the book is quite atmospheric. It's really surprising to see all of the Cyberpunk tropes established in a single novel. but I couldn't follow what was happening in the final 3rd. I'll probably read it instead though.

There's a good book hiding under that performance.

Loved the overall book. The tone and story.
But if you are going to listen to this. It can get a bit confusing towards the end.
So not something to have on as an easy listen in while doing something else.

Really good. But hard to follow
