About this listen

Elizabeth Haynes' new psychological thriller is a brilliantly suspenseful and shocking story in which nothing is at it seems, but everything is at stake.

Sarah Carpenter lives in an isolated farmhouse in North Yorkshire, and for the first time after the death of her husband some years ago and her children, Louis and Kitty, leaving for university, she's living alone. But she doesn't consider herself lonely. She has two dogs, a wide network of friends and the support of her best friend, Sophie.

When an old acquaintance, Aiden Beck, needs somewhere to stay for a while, Sarah's cottage seems ideal, and renewing her relationship with Aiden gives her a reason to smile again. It's supposed to be temporary, but not everyone is comfortable with the arrangement: her children are wary of his motives, and Will Brewer, an old friend of her son's, seems to have taken it upon himself to check up on Sarah at every opportunity.

Even Sophie has grown remote and distant. After Sophie disappears, it's clear she hasn't been entirely honest with anyone, including Will, who seems more concerned for Sarah's safety than anyone else. As the weather closes in, events take a dramatic turn, and Kitty, too, goes missing.

Suddenly Sarah finds herself in terrible danger, unsure of who she can still trust. But she isn't facing this alone; she has Aiden, and Aiden offers the protection that Sarah needs. Doesn't he?

A good crime story, interesting characters individually writing. However, felt it was too long really and the sexual scenes too many as this was about crime not an education in sex! Nevertheless I enjoyed the book and have to say was very impressed with the narrator, will watch for more of him.

I’ve listened to 3 of Elizabeth Haynes books on audible and this was my fourth. I almost gave up. I like suspense but the build up was just too long. The end of the book is very exciting but I don’t think this book is one of her best.

Slow burn

If you could sum up Never Alone in three words, what would they be?

Good enjoyable read.

Any additional comments?

Another excellent book by Elizabeth Haynes. Well narrated by Mark Meadows. The story has plenty of drama and suspense with no excessive violent scenes (which I hate). Never Alone kept my full attention right to the last page.

Excellent

Keeps you gripped from the start to the end. Packed with detail, a little erotic, a superb thriller.

Brilliant!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, as it was good to start off then went downhill around half way through

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Ridiculous..didn't explain anything about why what happened & very abrupt.

What does Mark Meadows bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Sinister & great at showing emotion

Do you think Never Alone needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No point at all

Potential to be a good read but crap ending

The only downfall was that I couldn't stop listening and even cancelled a night out with friends as it was keeping in suspense. Ha ha. Love this author A+ from me :-)

Brilliant couldn't stop listening!

Some parts of this story were a bit pedestrian, even though they explored people's personalities and relationships. Whilst I didn't enjoy this one as much as Ms Haynes debut book, I found the ending compelling and exciting as it explored the results of an obsessive nature.

a compelling ending

Christine

Got half way then gave up through sheer boredom. Sex scenes are too frequent and almost irrelevant. It lacks drive and has too much padding.

Worse than cheap soap opera
