Summary
Sarah Hussain was not popular in the community of Kingsmarkham. She was born of mixed parents - a white Irishwoman and an immigrant Indian Hindu. She was also the Reverend of St Peter's church. But it came as a profound shock to everyone when she was found strangled in the vicarage.
A garrulous cleaner, Maxine, also shared by the Wexfords, discovers the body. In his retirement, the former Detective Chief Inspector is devoting much time to reading, and has little patience with Maxine's prattle. But when his old friend Mike Burden asks him to assist on the case as Crime Solutions Adviser (unpaid), Wexford is obliged to pay more precise attention.
Wexford retains a relish for work and a curiosity about people, which is invaluable in detective work; while Burden tends to jump to conclusions. But he is wise enough to listen to the man whose office he inherited, and whose experience makes him a formidable ally.

not one of her best
RR is brilliant at her best, this is not her best... a rather forced story containing annoying literary references... I might read Gibbon but don't enjoy the constant references to the series which here break the flow of the story. Not for me so cannot recommend.

Loved the narration
I’m a Rendell fan and having exhausted all have better ones come out , I was pleased to this one was better than I expected.

Entertaining and a good listen
What did you like most about No Man's Nightingale?
I loved the way the reader managed to carry Wexford off as the character George Baker brought to us, it added to a nostalgic feel of the Ruth Rendell books of old!

The story line was pretty good, better than the last couple and the reader was excellent
Have you listened to any of Nigel Anthony’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Haven't heard his others but look forward to doing so. He is certainly able to make you distinguish one character from another.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No not really, just reminded me of 20 years ago when Wexford appeared on our screens - can't understand why it's so hard to get hold of the series now

Twists and turns
If you could sum up No Man's Nightingale in three words, what would they be?
This novels twists and turns and doesn't release its secret until right near to the end of the book. A really enjoyable listen with a great narrator.

Wonderful reader
I hope it goes without saying by now that all RR’s books are woven well, entertaining and keep you coming back for more. What’s truly wonderful here though, is that her story is beautifully translated into the spoken word by Nigel Anthony. I confess to not having heard of him, but his reading is superb, accents changing realistically, and quite apart from the dreaded poor reading that can ruin a great book on Audible. Look out, in particular, for Maxine Sams and Victoria Steiner, two characters where Mr Anthony’s voices had me laughing out loud on wood walks, earning me some stares from other dog owners.

Wonderful Old School Stuff
Brilliantly read. An escape into the gentle but surprisingly busy world of retired Wexford. Characters drawn so vividly, with Nigel Anthony's narration bringing them to life. The cleaner's voice was a work of genius - I loved every second of this book.
