About this listen

The entire world knows Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future; as Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties; as Mike Flaherty in Spin City; and through numerous other movie roles and guest appearances on shows such as The Good Wife and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally engaged in Parkinson's advocacy work, raising global awareness of the disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, the world's leading non-profit funder of PD science. His two previous best-selling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the while exhibiting his iconic optimism. His new memoir reassesses this outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges.

In No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, Michael shares personal stories and observations about illness and health, ageing, the strength of family and friends, and how our perceptions about time affect the way we approach mortality. Thoughtful and moving, but with Fox's trademark sense of humour, his book provides a vehicle for reflection about our lives, our loves and our losses.

Running through the narrative is the drama of the medical madness Fox recently experienced, which included his daily negotiations with the Parkinson's disease he's had since 1991 and a spinal cord issue that necessitated immediate surgery. His challenge to learn how to walk again, only to suffer a devastating fall, nearly caused him to ditch his trademark optimism and "get out of the lemonade business altogether".

Does he make it all of the way back? Listen to the audiobook.

Don't think I have read a biography so personal for a very long time. Truly interesting, whitty and heartfelt. Puts life's challenges into perspective and to never take for granted what you have but also to realise what can seem a negative to an outsider actually makes that person and eveyones life for the better. Keep up the fight

Just like his previous books, this latest installment is a true joy very sincere and refreshing! Gotta love Michael J Fox

I expect that had Michael J chosen to have someone else narrate this book, everyone would have accepted & respected that. The fact that he didn’t, speaks volumes for the determined albeit occasionally, well ‘stupid’ character that he is. People who have followed his career and particularly his work for the Fox Foundation love him for both of those traits, especially the latter! Such people will love this book. A warm and encouraging testament to the fact that Hollywood actors can have long and happy marriages, because this book is as much about the Fox family as it is about Michael J.

Heart warming & reassuringly familiar

To hear MJ Fox reading his own book is great, it’s clear that he didn’t always find it easy, but this is a story about being - and remaining - positive.

Highly recommended

This is so much more than a book about Parkinson’s or a book for Michael J Fox fans, it is funny, interesting, emotional, relatable and 100% inspiring, and I mean that in a deeply philosophical way, he gives a new approach to life and how to get the best out of it, whatever your situation. Well worth the read/listen (I did both) couldn’t put it down!

Always loved Michael as he seemed a grounded, relatable person. This book only enhanced that. His indefatigable spirit is immense and serves as a reminder that perhaps all is not lost for humanity. I often think about who I'd love to have for a guest at a dinner party and Michael is top of my list. If you're reading Michael, let me know your availability 😉

whilst I don't have PD I do have chronic pain, there was lots in this book I could identify, and like Michael I now see my wheelchair as a tool instead of the enemy. Thank you for the honesty and sincerity.

Enjoyed this even more so with Michael reading his own story and words to us.

As a recent diagnosis of Parkinsons this gives me hope and some motivation after years of looking for an answer.

It's helped make sense of certain things and made me laugh. I need to laugh at some of my new tricks and trips...

Thank you for the honesty xx
